A word of warning for all you wanna be footballer's wives
09 Jun 2006

BEING a footballer's girl can seriously boost your wealth but put a strain on your health.

The squad of England wives, headed up by Victoria Beckham, are about to welcome Theo Walcott's girlfriend Melanie Slade to their glam lifestyle. But keeping up with footie wife fashion can come at quite a price, as recent picture of Posh's painful bunions have shown.

Dr Rob Hicks, a London GP who writes health books, warns that their high-maintenance look is beset with problems.

As the first ladies of footie prepare to fly off to Germany today, he tells how they face hazards ranging from shopper's shoulder to makeup overload and the titfalls, sorry, pitfalls of plastic surgery.
And here he offers a few timely tips to 17-year-old Mel to ensure she doesn't fall foul of life as one of the footballers' wives.

MAKE-UP
THE footballers' wife look is all about gloss and grooming - just look at Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy.

So whether you're on a shopping spree or lunching with the girls, nothing less than full make-up will do. But while your slap can hide a multitude of sins, it can cause grief too so don't forget to cleanse.

SUNGLASSES
SHADES worth at least £1,000 and with a Gucci or Chanel logo are a must for celebs. But let's hope Rio Ferdinand's partner, Rebecca Ellison, 25, has the right ones.

Choosing lenses that don't block harmful rays is shortsighted - leaving risks such as cataracts, macular degeneration and retinal burn.

"Unless they offer UV protection, and carry the CE mark, glasses are useless," says Dr Hicks.

BOOB JOB
STEVEN Gerrard's fiancee, Alex Curran, 23, had her breasts enlarged to a fuller D cup three years ago. But sometimes it's best not to mess with your bust.

Dr Hicks says: "There is a danger of post-operative infection or surgery not turning out as hoped. A botched job could leave uneven breasts. And enlarged breasts on a small body can put pressure on the back and cause pain."

DESIGNER BAG
WAYNE Rooney's fiancée, Coleen McLoughlin is known for posh bags. But she'd better watch out.

Dr Hicks says: "Hauling huge bags around can cause "shopper's shoulder" back and joint problems - and even repetitive strain injury."

He advises that backpacks are much more sensible for carrying huge weights. But Coleen would probably give the idea of a designer rucksack a massive heave ho.

SUNTAN
A REAL footballer's wife is always bronzed to perfection.

Michael Owen's wife Louise was spotted sunning herself during the pre-cup trip to Portugal.

But too much tanning can age skin prematurely and cause more serious conditions such as skin cancer. Dr Hicks said: "Tanned skin is damaged skin. So if you want a tan - fake it." Instead, slap on the St Tropez girls.

HIGH HEELS

THEY might look great with your Roberto Cavalli frock, but as Victoria Beckham is finding out, wearing high heels too often can ruin your feet.

She has suffered with bunions since 2003 and is considering surgery to avoid what she calls "granny feet".

Bunions, back trouble and even arthritis are all associated with spending too much time tottering on your high-heel shoes.
